Module 1D: Mary in the Carmelite Tradition

This module is a brief introduction to the theme of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Carmelite Order.

There are three books that expand on the material of this module, “Mary in Carmel.” You may be able to find and read them at a Carmelite friary or monastery. But if you cannot, don’t panic; there will be sufficient material given in each unit to allow you to get a solid grasp of the theme.  The books are:


There is no point in looking for these books in a bookshop. The first two are available from the Carmelite Book Service, Boars Hill Oxford., OXI 5HB  The third book by C. O’Donnell was issued in a limited edition in and is now our of print. It will probably be available in libraries of Carmelite Friars, O.Carm.   It is available on the British O.Carm  website:   www.ocarm.org under Carmelite Spirituality.   There are also two documents that you can find on the Internet. The first is the letter of Pope John Paul II to the two superiors general of the Order on the occasion of the Carmelite Marian year in 2001. The second is a “Letter of the Prior General (O. Carm) and the Superior General (ODC) on the occasion of the 750 Anniversary of the Scapular”during the Marian year. Both are available on the Irish Carmelite website:   www.carmelites.ie. Go to the homepage, then choose “archive and articles” from the drop down menu. The two letters are under the heading "Letters".

The module is divided into 5 units of input and, at the end, you may complete a Questionnaire, write a Learning Journal, or write an Assignment .

From the date corresponding to the relevant Monday (see main web page of www.cibi.ie), you can click on the relevant unit to access it. Each module includes links to other internet sites of various kinds related to the material being covered.

Once you have successfully accessed and studied the material in each module and received the Assignment titles and the questionnaire, pleace complete either the Questionnaire, write a Learning Journal, or write an Assignment based on one of the titles given, and return it to to the course administrator: admin@cibi.ie
