Module 2B2 The Carmelite School of Spirituality: A Teresian Perspective

This course is part of the Distance Learning Website of

the Carmelite Institute of Britain and Ireland

This module is an attempt by two Secular Discalced Carmelites to delineate what they see as distinctive in the Discalced/Teresian approach to Carmelite spirituality. Inevitably, therefore, we are focused on the two foundation stones of the Order, Teresa of Jesus and John of the Cross. The attempt is not to offer you a detailed introduction to these great Carmelites, that is the task of other modules. Rather we are trying to draw out themes and perspectives in their lives and teaching which they see as giving the Teresian Carmel its particular flavour.

There is sufficient reading incorporated into the units but if you wish to do more then try

M H Garcia The Carmelite Community in the Church  (£4.25 from Darlington Carmel. Nunnery lane, Darlington DN3 9PN

Two further books from Darlington would also be useful if you wish to do some more follow-up:-
For St Teresa

Emmanuel Renault  The Teresian Gospel

For St John of the Cross

M H Garcia Lover’s Quest

You may find the style of the following book a bit heavy going but, if you can cope with it, then I’d recommend you to find

Aelred Squire Asking the Fathers, SPCK, 1994, esp chs17 & 18

Course Tutors: Philip Nelson OCDS and Heather Ward OCDS
