Module 4D The Teresian Reform

This module is concerned with the origins of the Discalced Carmelite Order in the life and work of St Teresa of Avila and the growth of the Discalced Carmelites as a distinct Order from her time to the present day. In the module you will be looking at the genesis of the Reform and first foundation (1558-1562), the development of the reform for nuns and further foundations by S. Teresa, the extension of the Reform to the friars. Their early development and conflicts experienced, the further development of friars and nuns and the eventual independence of the friars, and the Teresian Reform 1600-2000.
If you have access to it it would be useful to read chapters 12 – 16 of St Teresa’s Life, this is volume 1 in St Teresa of Jesus Complete Works, vol 1, in the translations either by E.Allison Peers, published Burns & Oates or by Kieran Kavanaugh & Otilio Rodriguez, published by ICS
If you can obtain it you would also find helpful:E. Allison Peers, Handbook to the life and times of St. Teresa and St. John of the Cross. More easily available are some short studies printed by Darlington Carmel. especially Otilio Rodriguez, A history of the Teresian Carmel, MH Garcia, The Carmelite Community in the Church, and Finian Monahan, The Teresian Carmelites.These are available by post from Carmelite Convent, Nunnery Lane, Darlington, DL3 9PN, UK.
