The Carmelite Institute of Britain & Ireland (CIBI) was set up by the Provincials of the British and Irish Carmelites and Discalced Carmelites in 2005. The purpose of the Institute is to diffuse the Carmelite charism, heritage, and spirituality, by offering introductory and more advanced courses and awards in Carmelite Studies, through part-time distance-learning, to members of the Carmelite Family and others interested in this area. In an accessible but scholarly way, the Institute offers the Carmelite Family, the Church, and all those interested, a structured way of studying Carmel’s heritage and spirituality. On the weekend of 20/21st June 2009, Fernando Romeral Millán, the OCarm Prior General, delivered the annual lecture of the Carmelite Institute of Britain & Ireland (CIBI) on "The Community of the Carmelite Rule as a Reconciled Community."The prior general's central contention was that the Rule of Saint Albert presents Carmelites with a vision of being a reconciled and reconciling community. Drawing upon the Rule's foundations in Scripture - especially the vision of Christian community life found in The Acts of the Apostles - Fr. Fernando showed how the Rule highlights the need for Carmelites to be friends of God by being friends of one another, overcoming conflict and division, and showing others how to do the same. Previous annual lectures are available on the following links: Annual Lecture 2008; Annual Lecture 2007
In conjunction with the Annual Lecture this year, members of the Executive Board of CIBI met with the students of CIBI who attended the Annual Lecture in Dublin and in London.
The first graduations of students enrolled in CIBI took place in Dublin on Tuesday 6th October 2009. The first three graduates of the Adult Education Diploma in Carmelite Studies were Patricia Bradburn, a member of the OCarm Third Order Secular (TOC) now living in Devon, Ann Hardman, a member of the Discalced Carmelite Secular Order (OCDS) from the Wirral, and Sr Mary-Cecilia Lee, a Discalced Carmelite nun from the Delgany Carmel in Co.
